Happy 5th Anniversary and Birthday wishes to GU!

“It’s never too late to be what you want to be, unless you want to be younger” ... Anonymous

Well, while this is very true, having a youthful mindset and outlook on life has no age limit (I’ll take that any day). This month, I will turn 72 and my blog will enter its fifth-year anniversary. Together, we plan to celebrate another year exploring life while being purposeful. Health continues to be on top of my priority list as I continue to be challenged. One thing I’ve learned, getting old, requires a lot of work.

I am presently in Costa Rica for a couple of weeks in the city of San Jose having left Quito. I will then be making a detour to Mexico to undergo Stem Cell therapy for my back in hopes that this will lessen my pain. I will keep you posted on my progress as nothing is guaranteed.

This month’s feature stories include one on “Reflections”. Birthdays for me are about reflecting on the past and what could be different going forward. I thought it would be important to try to memorialize what this past year of travel has been like apart from all the sightseeing.

The second narrative summarizes the week I spent in Bogota, which is distinctly different from Cartagena and marks my final destination in Colombia. Finally, my third story involves an adventurous five-day cruise in the Galápagos Islands. If you have been thinking about visiting the Galapagos Islands this story and the photos might help get you there sooner.

Under our section on Stories Missed, I am reposting a prior article I’ve written about the significance of birthdays and anniversaries in case you’d like to rethink how to celebrate life’s most momentous events and milestones. Its required reading for me.

For now, let me wish you and your family a Happy Easter and Passover. I know many of you are looking forward to Spring in what has been a brutal winter. In the meantime, keep warm.

As always, your help in introducing the newsletter to others is deeply appreciated. Let me know if you would like to meet or do a zoom chat. Below is my scheduling link so we can avoid the back and forth of finding a mutual convenient time. Looking forward to connecting with you soon. 🎂 🐰 🌸

Feature Stories

Seventy and Solo: A Year of Adventure, Challenges, Freedom and Reflections

As I approach my 72nd birthday, I always like to reflect back and assess the year and what would be different going forward.  For this year's birthday, I want to reflect on the process and outcomes of my first yearlong travel as a solo nomad at the age of 70. As I enter my second and final yearlong travel, I hope to add to these reflections documenting what I’ve learned while experiencing the emotional and physical changes that come with aging. Here goes…..Reflections.

Bogotá Uncovered: One Week in the City of Contrasts

I left Cartagena for a week stay in the capital of Bogota, a city 8500 feet above sea level with a population of over 8 million.  Bogota is the Colombia's cultural center as it dominated all forms of cultural expressions. A modern city with a beautiful historic center with much of its ancestral architecture still in place. No longer one of the most violent city in the world, Bogota today is a melting pot of all cultures from different regions known for its cuisine, murals, street markets, festivals and art.  I stayed several blocks from the historic, colorful Candelaria neighborhood, visiting many of its museums and historic buildings as well as making a trip to the popular Andean mountains to visit a friend. If you have plans to come to Bogota, check out my week in this amazing city….

Navigating Nature’s Masterpiece: A Galápagos Cruise Experience

A cruise through the Galápagos Islands will allow you to not only understand the connection between Charles Darwin and his theory on evolution but to see the force of the islands’ volcanic origin (still active) and its biodiversity both on land and sea. Each island (got to visit 7) is a lasting memory of the unique wildlife and geology of this remote region. Home to many species, such as the Galapagos land and marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and the famous Galápagos tortoise. But sadly, there are many challenges that threaten this “Living Museum” starting with rising sea levels, higher ocean temperature, invasive species, illegal fishing, over tourism and population growth. Although the islands are part of a national park, it may not have the resources to manage it conservation when there are so many uncontrollable factors and special interests. Here is my take on what was a lifetime adventure...

Nature's Isolated Beauty

"Every ocean has a shoreline and every shoreline has a tide that is constantly returning to wake the songbirds in our hands, to wake the music in our bones, to place one fearless kiss on the mouth of that new born river that has to run through the center of our hearts to find its way home." - Andrean Gibson

Today's Thought and Inspiration⛅

Oh No! another year, another birthday. It seems like it was just not so long ago. Reality sinks in ….with each birthday the path in front of us get a bit shorter. No Sweat. So happy to be alive and still exploring life. This year let's promise us that we will make every birthday a celebration of life. I leave you with a bit of inspiration on why birthdays are more relevant as we age and why we must celebrate every one of them…

“Birthdays are an opportunity to express gratitude, acknowledge growth, and celebrate life. They are a time to surround ourselves with loved ones, build deeper connections, and experience the joy of human connection. When we celebrate our birthdays, we are essentially celebrating ourselves.”

Exploring Your Wanderlust

Thinking about planning a trip to New York City between April 19 – June 17?

If so, you may want to catch artist Thomas J. Price 12 feet massive bronze sculpture of a black woman towering over New York’s Times Square. Best part, for the month of May (near midnight) at 11:57 PM all the Time Square billboards will have a stop-motion animation show orchestrated by the artist. A great time to visit the city!

Thomas J Price’s Grounded in the Stars will be on view in Times Square at Broadway and 46th Street, April 29–June 17. The animated show will be shown nightly May 1–31.

"February, the month where love is in the air, unless you're single, then it's just the draft from the open window."----- anonymous Aside from the humor, February is a month of awareness and inclusivity, which we need more now than ever. For those who live up north, February is also one of the coldest months of the year. Its coldness is symbolic of what we, as a nation are experiencing today. I worry about what is coming in the next several months and whether it can be stopped; I am surely...
